Troops' Safety Compromised by Unregulated Mobile Apps

A recent analysis of mobile applications targeted at U.S. military personnel has uncovered significant national security concerns, revealing that over one-eighth of these apps contain foreign code from companies based in China and Russia. This situation raises alarms about the potential for adversarial governments to access sensitive data regarding service members, including their locations and daily routines. Notably, some popular apps, such as those for rating living conditions, include code from Huawei, which U.S. regulators have identified as a national security threat. Additionally, two apps sourced from Russian companies incorporate Yandex's advertising services. The largely unregulated advertising industry treats military personnel similarly to civilians, despite the unique risks they face. Experts warn that the location data harvested from these apps could allow foreign spies to track U.S. service members, particularly in conflict zones. Furthermore, a study found that 64 percent of over 220 examined apps included third-party software development kits (SDKs) capable of tracking user behavior. Many military users expressed discomfort with these apps, emphasizing the need for stronger regulations and improved transparency to safeguard their privacy and security.
